The Harsh Reality: Homeless LGBTQ+ Youth Braving the Cold
As the temperature plummets and the winter chill settles across the United States, millions of us are bundling up in warm coats, enjoying hot drinks, and seeking shelter from the biting cold. Yet, for thousands of LGBTQ+ adolescents, these comforts are out of reach. Many are not only navigating the hardships of being homeless but are doing so in the unforgiving embrace of winter.
For LGBTQ+ youth, the path to homelessness often starts at home. Rejected for who they are, they are forced to leave environments that should have been their safe havens. Studies show that LGBTQ+ youth make up a disproportionately high percentage of the homeless population, with nearly 40% identifying as LGBTQ+. These are young people who were told to leave because of their identity, finding themselves on the streets with nowhere to turn.
This winter, I find myself reflecting on how fortunate I am to have a warm place to call home. I have a roof over my head, a bed to sleep in, and a hot meal to nourish me—things that many of these youth go without. The cold weather serves as a stark reminder of the challenges these young people face every day, compounded by the isolation and struggles that come with being rejected by family and society.
As we navigate this season, it’s important to acknowledge our blessings and consider those who are less fortunate. Homeless LGBTQ+ youth deserve more than just our thoughts—they deserve our action, empathy, and commitment to building a future where no one is left behind, no matter the weather.
