Small steps towards equality

It is quite refreshing to see some movie studios addressing transgender issues and casting transgender actors. In “Lands of Women” (Appletv) Victoria Bazua plays Kate – a transgender teenager, who faces discrimination when her personal information is leaked by the village doctor. Bazua shared with Big Gold Belt Media:
“Firstly, I hope that the viewers take in that the trans community, trans people are human beings, and we deserve to be respected and to be treated with love and respect. We’re just normal people living normal lives, our gender identity is just one percent of who we are. For example, Kate is not just trans, she’s an artist, she’s a teenager, she’s a daughter, she’s a granddaughter, and there’s a lot of us. We just want to be treated normally.”
Next in the movie “Emilia Perez” (scheduled to debut on Netflix on November 13, 2024), Karla Sofía Gascón plays a drug cartel tycoon who escapes Mexico, undergoes a gender-affirming surgery and returns to reunite with her wife and children. Gascón won best actress for the movie in Cannes and a New York Times article titled: “Meet the Trans Actress Who Could Make Oscar History” suggests she may even win an Oscar for her role.
Let’s hope that more movie studios include members of the Queer community and that it becomes the norm and not the exception.
